ASHTANGA YOGA

What is Mysore Practice?

Mysore practice is the traditional method of learning Ashtanga Yoga, as taught in Mysore, India.

In this format, students practice in a group setting while receiving individual guidance. Students learn the sequence gradually, practicing at their own pace with individual guidance, and developing a steady, consistent practice over time.

Rather than being led through the entire class together, students build familiarity with the sequence step by step—connecting breath, movement, and attention.

This approach allows beginners and experienced practitioners to practice alongside one another, each working at their own level.

For new students

No prior knowledge of the sequence is required.

You will be guided through a simple starting sequence and supported as your practice develops. Over time, the sequence is learned progressively and becomes familiar through regular practice.

Consistency is key. With steady practice, the body and mind adapt naturally.

Led classes

In Led classes, the teacher guides the group through the sequence with breath and count. These classes are best suited for students who are already familiar with the sequence.

Lineage

Ashtanga Yoga was taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and continues through the lineage in Mysore, India, including R. Sharath Jois and Saraswathi Rangaswamy.
